Best and Worst Foods for Psoriasis

Discovering foods to help fuel my body has always been important to me. I’m sure many of you can relate when I say staying away from unhealthy foods is an uphill battle. Within the last few years, I’ve had to adjust my diet to ensure I always feel my best. This meant breaking some poor eating habits and staying consistent in eating healthier. Through research, I’ve learned that a change in diet can help reverse or relieve symptoms brought on by a health condition. It was surprising to find out that by eliminating specific foods, you can also influence your sleep patterns and energy levels.

For Psoriasis Awareness month, I thought I’d share how foods can help you manage psoriasis. Let’s first discuss some facts about this condition. Currently 7.5 million people in the United States are affected by psoriasis, which is a chronic skin condition that causes overproduction of inflamed, scaly skin cells, and irritation to the affected area. Unfortunately, the cause of psoriasis is unknown. Researchers are continually working to develop a cure, but right now, there are only treatment plans that can help alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis.

Eating (or not eating) particular foods may help manage symptoms of psoriasis. If you struggle with this condition, listed below are foods you should consider adding to or eliminating from your diet. I am not a doctor, so I recommend you speak with yours before making any dietary changes.

Foods to avoid:

  1. Those containing gluten
  2. Dairy
  3. Red meat

The foods noted above are filled with properties that can heighten inflammation in the body. Try removing one or all of the food items listed and monitor how your body responds. Also consider including more of these inflammation-fighting foods below into your diet.

Foods to include:

  1. Fish and seafood
  2. Blueberries
  3. Squash
  4. Nuts

These foods have properties that may help counterattack symptoms brought on by psoriasis. When outbreaks are under control, you can hopefully stress less and get back to enjoying life.

I know how hard it can be to make better dietary choices, but once you’ve started your new routine and start seeing results, you’ll be surprised at how easy it can be to stay on track.
